The just energy transition in Nalaikh, Mongolia, is not only a long-term policy process; it is also a transformation that directly affects people’s daily lives, from how homes are heated to where future jobs will come from. For this transition to succeed, it needs both technical solutions and public understanding.
In Mongolia, heating remains one of the most pressing challenges during cold, harsh winters. Many households rely on coal-based heating that is costly, inefficient, and a major source of air pollution. Poor insulation also means that much of the heat is lost, forcing families to use more coal while still struggling to stay warm. Addressing this issue is therefore both an environmental and a social priority.
At the same time, Nalaikh is transitioning from a former mining district to a greener and more diversified local economy. This shift is creating new opportunities, but it is also leading to uncertainty for residents, especially those whose livelihoods were tied to coal.
As these changes take shape, helping communities understand what the transition means—and how it affects them—becomes essential.
To address this, Nalaikh has integrated its JET Strategy 2040 into the local government’s 2024–2028 Action Plan. A key component of this plan is transparent communication to ensure that everyone is informed about the progress of Mongolia’s just energy transition. To support this initiative, the IKI JET project, in close collaboration with the Nalaikh government, has produced a series of videos to make the transition more understandable by showing what it means in practice and highlighting the benefits, such as lower costs, improved living conditions, and new job opportunities.
Across four short videos, the series looks at key aspects of the transition: rehabilitating former mining land; greening the electricity mix through solar energy; addressing heating challenges through insulation and efficiency improvements; and creating new jobs and skills for the future.
By linking policy decisions to everyday realities, the videos help make the transition more tangible and accessible. Ultimately, the goal is to ensure that the transition in Nalaikh is not only technically successful but also understood, supported, and shaped by the people it affects.
The videos will be shared through Nalaikh channels to raise public awareness. Watch them all here.
