3. Links to Outside Resources

IISD.org may link to other external resources (such as websites, mobile applications, etc.). In doing so, we are not—either directly or indirectly—implying any approval, association, sponsorship, endorsement, or affiliation unless specifically stated. Such linked websites are independent of IISD, and IISD has no control over the content of such websites. Consequently, IISD cannot be held liable and makes no warranty or representation whatsoever as to the accuracy, timeliness, and/or completeness of the information contained on such websites.

4. Copyright and Permissions

Intellectual Property

The Website is owned and operated by IISD. Any and all content, data, graphics, photographs, images, audio, video, software, systems, processes, trademarks, trade names, and other information contained in the Website (collectively, the “Content”) are proprietary to IISD or third-party licensors. The Content is protected by Canadian, United States, and international copyright and trademark laws.

Open Use Policy

IISD publishes all content (with the exception of photos, see Point 5) under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0) licence, which requires that:

  • Attribution to IISD is given and a link to the CC licence is included.
  • The material cannot be used for commercial purposes.
  • If the material is remixed, transformed, or built upon, distribution of this altered material must also be under a CC licence.

Under this licence, users of the Website are encouraged to use IISD published material for their own non-commercial use. For online use, in addition to the link back URL to the Creative Commons licence, we ask that you also provide a link back to the Website URL where the original content can be found.

If you are interested in using IISD material for commercial purposes, please contact us publishing@iisd.ca for permission.

Republishing IISD Reports and Linking to IISD.org URLs

We do not allow for our published reports and other publications (“IISD Reports”) to be reproduced or otherwise made available for download on non-IISD websites without prior permission. We request that you use the IISD.org URL when linking to our IISD Reports. This ensures we are able to accurately track the use of our research and communications outputs for evaluation purposes.

Permission is not required for the use of IISD links on outside websites. We encourage links to our Website wherever possible.

If you are interested in having an IISD publication available as a downloadable resource on your website, pleas contact us for permission:

When we do, we will revise the updated date at the top of this page. Additionally, IISD reserves the right at any time and from time to time to modify or discontinue, temporarily or permanently, the Website (or any part thereof) with or without notice. You are responsible for regularly reviewing the Terms of Use, including, without limitation, by checking the date of “Last Update” at the top of this document. Continued use of the Website after any such changes shall constitute your consent to be bound by such changes, with continued provision of the use of the Website constituting consideration from IISD to you for so being bound. IISD does not warrant that the functions on the Website will be uninterrupted, error-free, or free of viruses or other harmful components.

In no event shall IISD, its affiliates, officers, employees, agents, and licensors be liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages that result from or are in connection with the use of, or the inability to use, the Website, any content, even if IISD has been advised of the possibility of such damages. A printed copy of these Terms of Use and of any notice in electronic form shall be admissible in any judicial or administrative proceedings to the same extent and under the same conditions as other business documents and records originally generated and maintained in printed form.
