Securing a worker-centred just energy transition in South Africa, a country already tackling the twin economic and social challenges of joblessness and inequality, is vital.
This research report documents the experiences and perceptions of trade union leaders relating to the impacts of the energy transition at the ground level and in communities.
The report then proposes potential solutions, merging sustainable industrial policy with workers’ voices to carve a sustainable pathway that will ensure social and economic benefits for those that will be impacted.
It interrogates themes of joblessness, livelihood impacts, upskilling and reskilling, the role of government, and how sustainable industrial policy can merge these into solutions that promote inclusive economic development that serves as a safety net for workers.
