Background

The transformation of critical energy sources, such as the coal sector, in the pursuit of low-carbon economies is one of the most important strategies to reach the objectives of the Paris Agreement and protect the planet from global warming. Coal mining and coal-fired energy, however, have sustained national and global economies for many decades.

Coal mining regions in particular face significant challenges now that global and local climate commitments are calling for the transformation, and in certain countries the phase out of coal. Notwithstanding, opportunities also exist to achieve a just energy transition, that contributes to environmental, societal, and economic goals. Regions in transition can benefit from knowledge sharing spaces, particularly when actors and stakeholders that are leading the energy transition can come together to share state-of-the-art knowledge and ongoing practices, challenges, and reflections.

Objectives

The 2025–26 IKI-JET training programme equips participants with the skills and knowledge to actively shape just energy transitions in coal regions. Participants will:

  • Exchange lessons and strategies across Latin America, Africa, and Asia-Pacific through inter-regional dialogue.
  • Build a solid foundation on just transition principles, with practical tools to engage in local planning and stakeholder processes.
  • Strengthen capacities to design inclusive, gender-responsive skills development strategies for workers in transition.
  • Join the Just Energy Transition Academy to deepen expertise, tailor learning to country needs, and co-develop solutions with peers.
  • Share outcomes, successes, and challenges to reinforce collaboration across the IKI-JET community.

Target Audience

  • National government representatives involved in the coal transition (Ministries of Labour, Planning, Mining, Finance, Economic Development, Women’s Affairs, Environment, Trade, Industry and Tourism, among others)
  • Local government representatives in coal mining regions in Indonesia, India, Mongolia, South Africa, Thailand, and Viet Nam, Colombia and Chile
  • Private sector representatives, including employers’ organizations, nationally and in coal mining regions in Chile, Colombia, Indonesia, India, Mongolia, South Africa, Thailand, and Viet Nam
  • Workers’ representatives nationally and in coal mining regions in Chile, Colombia, Indonesia, India, Mongolia, South Africa, Thailand, and Viet Nam
  • Civil society organizations and academia involved in the coal transition
