Transforming Economies for a Just and Low-Carbon Future: Diversification strategies that promote equity, inclusion, and sustainability
Coal phase-out is a critical step towards achieving the Paris Agreement target to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. Yet, coal mining and coal-fired power have long been pillars of economic growth, especially in coal-rich regions. How can these regions shift to low-carbon economies whilst preserving local jobs, livelihoods, and economic vitality?
This online workshop, hosted by the International Labour Organization (ILO), aims to address the challenges of coal transitions. The workshop seeks to build capacity in designing local economic development strategies that attract investment, create inclusive employment opportunities and promote sustainable private sector development in coal mining regions. Participants will learn from practical cases in different regions across Asia through presentations and exchanges among participants.
The workshop forms part of the Community of Practice (CoP) for Just Energy Transition in Asia, facilitated by the ILO under the project “Innovation Regions for a Just Energy Transition” (IKI-JET). The initiative supports stakeholders as they plan and implement just energy transition pathways away from coal.
This event will take place in English. Interpretation to other languages (Indonesian, Vietnamese, Mongolian, among others) will be available upon request. For additional information or inquiries, please contact Ananda Alonso Nacher at: nacher@ilo.org.
