Indonesia Sustainable Energy Week Goes Regional in Partnership with the International Forum for Coal Regions in Transition 2025

The International Forum for Coal Regions in Transition will take place on 14 October 2025 in Samarinda, Indonesia, and online, under the banner of Indonesia Sustainable Energy Week Goes Regional (ISEWGR).

The forum is an annual policy dialogue organised by the Innovation Regions for a Just Energy Transition (IKI JET) project’s Interregional Platform for Coal Regions (JET-CR platform). It brings together stakeholders from global coal regions to exchange insights, share best practices, and explore innovative solutions for just energy transitions. Previous sessions were held in 2023 and 2024, each facilitating a fruitful global dialogue on just transitions.

In 2025, the forum has embarked on a new form of collaboration, teaming up with the Clean, Affordable and Secure Energy (CASE) for Southeast Asia project and the German-Indonesian Energy Cooperation Hub of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), within the framework of ISEWGR. By connecting the global dialogue on coal transitions with Indonesia’s regional transition processes, this partnership is strengthening the alignment between international experiences and local realities.

This year’s sessions will examine the role of local governments in supporting renewable energy investments and repurposing former mining land; explore strategies for economic diversification in coal regions, including opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises and financing tools; and present international case studies that offer lessons from other transition contexts.

Hosted by the Ministry of National Development Planning of the Republic of Indonesia (Bappenas) and the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR), the forum will convene governments, regional authorities, labour unions, academia, civil society, and the private sector for an inclusive dialogue on building sustainable futures in coal-dependent regions.

The International Forum for Coal Regions in Transition forms part of the broader Indonesia Sustainable Energy Week Goes Regional (ISEWGR), taking place from 13–16 October 2025. While the Forum will be held on 14 October, ISEWGR also features sessions on 13 October (Dialogue on a Just Energy Transition at the Regional Level, hybrid) and 15 October (Strategies for Economic Resilience and a Just Energy Transition, hybrid until noon, in-person only afterwards).
