First Conference on Transitioning Away from Fossil Fuels

Colombia and the Netherlands will host the First Conference on Transitioning Away from Fossil Fuels.

The conference will take place from 28-29 April in Santa Marta, Colombia, and will comprise plenary and parallel thematic sessions with high-level representatives. Stakeholder-led dialogues will be held between 24-27 April.

The conference will advance international cooperation on transitioning away from fossil fuel extraction in line with the ‘Belem Declaration on the Just Transition Away from Fossil Fuels’. It aims to initiate a concrete process through which a coalition of relevant stakeholders can advance enabling pathways towards a just energy transition.

This process will be informed by the experience and perspectives of national and subnational governments, academia, Indigenous Peoples and local communities, civil society, workers, the private sector, and other key actors at different stages of the transition. The event will not conclude with a negotiated outcome but aims to “generate shared understanding and actionable guidance that can help accelerate a just, orderly, and equitable transition away from fossil fuels.”
