Carbon Markets, Unseen Workers: Labour rights and governance gaps in Africa

Are carbon markets in Africa delivering a just and sustainable future? Or do we risk repeating the exploitative patterns found in other global value chains?

Solidarity Center will hold a briefing, co-hosted by FORGE, to share findings on labour rights in Africa’s carbon markets, helping to fill a critical gap in global climate policies. A new report examines how the failure to include workers and their organisations in carbon market governance structures denies fundamental labour rights.

Many carbon market projects face risks similar to those found across global supply chains, including informal and insecure work, worker misclassification, and limited labour protections. These challenges can affect whether carbon markets fully deliver on their goals for environmental sustainability and inclusive economic outcomes. The report includes country spotlights and case studies, with recommendations closely informed by trade unions and worker organisations across Africa.

Join the webinar to explore the implications of carbon market projects and governance structures for working people. Labour leaders and experts will share their insights and actionable recommendations for improving carbon market governance, particularly for workers and their communities.

French and Portuguese interpretation will be available.
