Building Worker-Centred Pathways for Indonesia’s Energy Transition: Just transition trade union guide launch

Indonesia has pledged to cut emissions and reach net-zero by 2060 or earlier, with a strong emphasis on transitioning away from coal. While this shift is environmentally necessary, it has far-reaching consequences for workers, their families, and communities that depend on coal industries for their livelihoods.

A just transition is essential to ensuring inclusive and sustainable economic development. Trade unions are critical actors in shaping this transition to bring workers’ perspectives into policy debates, promote social dialogue, and help ensure that climate actions translate into equitable outcomes.

Union Aid Abroad–APHEDA, through the Innovation Regions for a Just Energy Transition (IKI JET) project, has partnered with the Indonesian Trade Union Confederation (KSPI) and the Confederation of All Indonesian Workers Unions (KSBSI) across two major coal-producing provinces, South Sumatra and East Kalimantan, to promote and support a worker-centred just energy transition grounded in labour rights, decent work, and inclusive economic development.

Join the launch of the Just Transition Trade Union Guide, where Indonesian trade unions will share their experience and learnings. The practical guidance—available as a handbook and online toolkit—is designed to help trade unions engage in just transition planning and advocacy.

The event will also bring together other just transition stakeholders, including national and regional government representatives from the Ministry of National Development Planning (Bappenas) and Ministry of Manpower, development partners, labour and climate organisations, civil society, and media.
