Repurposing Energy Assets for a Just Energy Transition

The Nicholas Institute for Energy, Environment & Sustainability and the James E. Rogers Energy Access Project at Duke will host a hybrid event to discuss the new research report titled “Systems-Level Repurposing of Coal Assets: Insights from South Africa, India, and the United States.”

This report—led by Duke researchers—presents a comprehensive comparative analysis of coal value chain repurposing efforts in South Africa, India, and the United States. It focuses on transforming multiple components of the coal infrastructure—such as mines, power plants, transport networks, and terminals—into new interlinked industrial applications to support a just and holistic energy transition.

The report presentation will be followed by a panel discussion featuring leading energy researchers, policy experts, and practitioners to explore the implications of systems-level repurposing for energy transition and economic development in coal-dependent regions.
