Amazon Without Oil: Pathways toward a just transition

Peru saw 1,460 oil spills between 1997 and 2023, with 831 of them occurring in the Amazon. On top of this is the financial mismanagement of state oil firm PetroPerú, which operates the Norperuvian Pipeline and various oil blocks. Indigenous groups report that the company lacks the funds for basic environmental remediation and support for affected communities and territories.

The Sacred Headwaters Alliance, as co-coordinators of the Working Group on the Impacts of Hydrocarbons under the National Human Rights Coordinator of Peru, together with the Interethnic Association for the Development of the Peruvian Amazon and the office of Congresswoman Ruth Luque, is set to hold a public forum entitled Amazon Without Oil: Pathways toward a just transition. This public dialogue on energy transition legislation seeks to add voices and reflections to help protect the Amazon and build sustainable alternatives from the territories. The open discussion will focus on four legislative proposals championed by legislators from Peru, Brazil, Colombia, and Ecuador, in direct dialogue with leaders of Indigenous organisations in the Peruvian Amazon.

The in-person event will take place at the José Faustino Sánchez Carrión auditorium in Lima, Peru. The event will also be broadcast on Facebook here.
