Expert Exchange: Flexibilisation and repurposing of coal-fired power plants
As coal-fired power plants remain central to electricity generation in many emerging economies, the Expert Exchange on Flexibilisation and Repurposing of Coal-Fired Power Plants will explore practical pathways to align existing infrastructure with just energy transition goals.
This session will focus on technical, regulatory, and financial approaches for transforming coal assets, including enhancing plant flexibility to support variable renewables and repurposing sites for alternative energy uses. Drawing on real-world experiences, the discussion will highlight case studies from Chile on coal plant repurposing, India on regulatory reforms for operational flexibility, and international perspectives on enabling system-level decarbonisation through coal transformation strategies.
