Our Energy Story: Green seeds under the grey sky
Our Energy Story is a comic book developed by Yayasan Mitra Hijau (YMH), as part of the Climate Action Network (CAN), to help young people in Indonesia’s coal regions understand and navigate the transition away from coal.
Building on YMH’s engagement with local communities in the regions of East Kalimantan and South Sumatra, the fictional story explores the perceptions, struggles, and hopes of people living near coal mines.
The comic book includes five characters from different walks of life: a teenager who lost her brother in an abandoned mine hole, a teenager whose family depends on coal industry income, a young environmental activist, a middle-aged coal worker facing job insecurity, and a 70-year-old elder from the Indigenous Dayak community. It follows these characters as their paths cross and they learn how to move forward together into a new chapter.
With a growing understanding that the coal era is winding down, they visit local villages, exchange perspectives, and expand each other’s horizons. Finally, they discover that solutions emerge when they embrace change and prepare for a cleaner future with green jobs such as land restoration, sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, and environmental advocacy.
